Cardiac Rehab: Do it for Your Heart
Our cardiac rehab patients are a testament to how resilient the heart is and what a difference outpatient cardiac rehabilitation makes. It’s not just one single thing: The exercise program; the heart healthy diet and lifestyle tips; or your reduced dependence on medication. Our St.Vincent Health cardiac wellness concept is proven and available through the Heart Centers and many of our outlying facilities.
St.Vincent cares for you before, during and after a major health event. If you have recently suffered from one of these cardiac events, you may qualify for outpatient cardiac rehabilitation:

What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?
Cardiac rehabilitation is designed to help you return to a normal, active lifestyle while reducing your risk for future cardiac problems. Benefits include:
- Improved strength for daily activity
- Increased endurance
- Healthier blood pressure and cholesterol levels
- Reduced dependence on medication
Phases of Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiac rehabilitation is divided into three phases:
- Phase 1-Inpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation
During your hospital stay, you'll learn the details of your heart condition, the importance of heart-healthy living, and what to expect for the rest of your cardiac rehabilitation.
- Phase 2-Structured Exercise and Education
When you visit an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation facility, staff will guide and monitor you as you complete a personalized exercise program using various types of equipment. The duration of your program may depend on your insurance coverage. Most major insurance companies cover Phase II Cardiac Rehab for 18 to 36 sessions (six to 12 weeks).
- Phase 3-Maintenance
Cardiac rehabilitation staff will continue to assist you with blood pressure and heart rate measurements, but during Phase 3, you will exercise independently and maintain a personal logbook. Phase 3 is not covered by insurance, but ask your St.Vincent Cardiac Rehabilitation facility about affordable rates.
