The St. Vincent Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is an ACGME approved program that participates in the NRMP match process. All positions are filled through the NRMP. There are no pre-match positions available. Applications are accepted August-October each year.
Applicants must be graduates of an accredited program in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, IM/FM, Pediatrics and/or Med/Peds and be board eligible/board certified. We expect board exams to be passed within 2 years of completing residency by ABFM, ABIM, and/or AAP.
USMLE and COMLEX Scores
We do not screen applications for review based strictly on a minimum score, but consider it when reviewing the total application. Steps 1 & 2 must be passed within 2 attempts; Step 3 is required within 3 years of fellowship start date and carries the same expectation of minimal attempts. We use the same criteria for COMLEX. The majority of candidates who secure an invitation to interview pass every exam on the first attempt.
Graduation from a U.S. medical school or a World Health Organization listed on the Medical Board of California* approved medical school list AND NOT on the Indiana Licensing Board Disapproval List or Questionable List Graduation Date within 5 years of fellowship start. Rare exceptions to this are possible provided there is proof of experience, practice, and documentation of continuing medical education through approved residency. Observerships do not qualify. At least 3 months of US hands-on clinical experience is required, but more than 12 months is the norm.
Foreign/International Medical Graduates
Our goal is to match with the best doctors regardless of whether they are IMG’s or USMG’s. Most International Medical Graduates work under a J-1 Visa. On rare occasions, other types may be considered provided that there is time to acquire it and that you have the proper credentials. We prefer the J visa because it is the most cost and time efficient.
We do not provide observerships.
Dates: The deadline for accepting applications is October 1. For selected applicants, interviews occur mid September through mid December.
How to schedule an interview: Interviews are scheduled by invitation only. Candidates will be able to select their preferred date using an on-line calendar.
Interview Day Agenda: The interview day is spent with the Program Director, faculty and current fellow(s) and will be approximately 5 hours including tours.
Interview Locations: St. Vincent Sports Performance Center, Joshua Max Simon Primary Care Center, program related athletic facilities.
Amenities: The applicant is responsible for transportation expenses, however hotel accomodations will be provided by the Sports Medicine Fellowship program.
We accept applications to the fellowship only through ERAS. We are unable to accept any email or faxed applications. Complete applications consist of the following:
- Copies of USMLE/COMLEX, Medical school diploma, ECFMG certification
- Personal Statement
- Curriculum Vitae
- Recent Photograph
- Current medical license. Candidates must be able to secure a license in Indiana
- 3 letters of recommendation - one of which must be from program director, another must be from a physician involved in musculoskeletal care (i.e. orthopedics, sports medicine)
We are able to accept the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine’s “Code of Ethics for the Match (ERAS System)” document that they require to participate in the process. Please refer to the AMSSM’s website for more information and the printable form: http://www.amssm.org/SMFellowshipAppProcess.php. Please scan or fax us a signed copy after you have completed your ERAS application.
We anticipate interviewing approximately 10 candidates per year for the one position. Much emphasis is placed on a readily apparent desire to pursue primary care sports medicine as evidenced by the application. This may include rotations completed or scheduled during residency, sideline and/or mass event exposure, scholarly activity, and conferences attended.
