Care for each child is coordinated with the family, recognizing that the family is the center of the child’s life.
Pediatric Therapy Teams
Our teams consist of:
- Occupational therapists help infants and children develop or regain play and life skills. Individualized treatment addresses fine motor and daily living skills such as writing and drawing, getting dressed, playing and eating.
- Physical therapists address developmental and gross motor abilities such as walking, running and jumping. Treatment may include building strength, increasing flexibility and improving balance & coordination.
- Speech-language pathologists focus on language and communication. Language development, articulation, augmentative communication, cognitive development, behavior modification, feeding and swallowing are areas that may be addressed.
- Audiologists address hearing needs of infants and children such as hearing screenings and specialized hearing devices to aid hearing.
Specialized Pediatric Therapies
Our clinicians possess specialized training in a number of areas including:
- Aquatic therapy: The buoyancy and warmth of the water facilitate a child’s progress in unique ways, and working in the pool makes therapy fun!
- Autism social group: Weekly sessions target a child’s social skills in a group setting with games, role-playing and crafts. Children learn appropriate peer interaction skills
- Casting and splinting: These techniques may be recommended to improve or maintain range of motion, provide extra support to a joint or prevent deformity.
- Cochlear implant and aural therapy: Intensive auditory and speech training is provided for children following cochlear implant surgery for hearing loss.
- Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT): CIMT focuses intensive therapy on a child’s arm that has been affected by hemiplegia or brachial plexus injury while the use of the unaffected arm is restricted.
- Feeding team: This interdisciplinary team includes pediatric physician specialists, nursing, and pediatric therapies to provide services to children with feeding difficulties.
- Handwriting Without Tears: This is a camp for improving legibility. Fun-filled sessions integrate both fine and gross motor play while improving handwriting skills.
- Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT): Many St.Vincent pediatric therapists have completed extensive training in NDT, an advanced therapeutic approach used to work with children who have movement difficulties related to central nervous system insults.
- Sensory integration: Children with sensory integration difficulties are guided through therapeutic activities that challenge their ability to respond appropriately to sensory stimuli
