Incontinence Rehabilitation

Pelvic floor dysfunction can manifest itself in several disorders, such as urinary and bowel incontinence and pain during normal activities. These conditions can have a significant impact on quality of life.

We understand the unique needs of those experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction. With our specialized rehabilitation services for women with pelvic pain and dysfunction, we are committed to providing the best care in the St.Vincent "Spirit of Caring."

Incontinence

Incontinence is the involuntary loss of bladder or bowel control. Urinary incontinence is the uncontrolled loss of urine, whether small wetting accidents or major amounts. Fecal or bowel incontinence is the involuntary loss of bowel control that results in loss of stool or soiling of the underwear.

Pelvic Pain

Chronic pelvic pain is mostly felt in the genital/rectal areas and can be aggravated by sitting, voiding, or sexual activity. Most people with this condition have lived with it for at least six months.

Treatment Options

St.Vincent's physical therapists have unique knowledge and skills to address the needs of women with incontinence and pelvic pain. We provide a conservative, non-surgical approach.

A qualified physical therapist will perform an evaluation and provide an individualized treatment plan. Treatment may include:

  • Exercise

  • Biofeedback: State-of-the-art computerized biofeedback to help retrain the pelvic floor muscles

  • Education on diet modifications and bladder habits

  • Manual therapy techniques, for tight muscles, joints or scars, and other physical modalities such as electrical stimulation, heat/cold, or ultrasound for pain relief
