Director's Welcome

Welcome to the Pediatric Residency Training Program at St. Vincent! The core values of St. Vincent: integrity, wisdom, creativity, reverence and service to the poor provide the foundation for the pediatric residency program. St. Vincent has a 120 year history of providing post graduate medical education, training physicians to provide health care that is safe, effective and available to all. Our hospital is part of Ascension Health, the largest Catholic healthcare network in the country.

Residents in our program learn and care for patients in the community that we serve. As a pediatric resident you will have the opportunity to care for children referred to St.Vincent for tertiary care from throughout the state. At the same time the pediatric outpatient clinic will provide you with a rich ambulatory experience. You will be exposed to a diverse patient population both in culture and in diagnosis.

While there are ample opportunities for patient care we also emphasize education over service. We realize we must prepare pediatricians who will practice in a health care system that is rapidly changing. We are committed to train superb clinicians and compassionate caregivers who are prepared for careers in a variety of settings, including general, subspecialty and inpatient pediatrics. Our program incorporates training in areas that are important to your future success. Some of these areas include: office management, documentation, coding, reimbursement, disaster preparedness, public health and advocacy, quality improvement, electronic health records, and contract negotiation. We provide residents opportunities to develop teaching skills through instruction modeling and practice as well as opportunities to develop research skills through mentorship with scholarly faculty.

As a small program we are able to focus on the education of each individual resident. Residents learn in an environment that fosters teamwork. Our training environment cultivates outstanding and quality patient care, academic excellence, understanding of our dynamic communities and a successful work-life balance. We are committed to providing you with the best educational experience possible. You will have direct interaction with the faculty on a regular basis as well as first opportunity to perform procedures. We have a large number of faculty who are outstanding teachers representing all fields of pediatrics. We value our residents and the role they play on the health care team. We know that a successful residency experience is dependent on the resident themselves but we consider our residents our greatest asset. We consider our residents as family and care about you as an individual.

Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Residency Program at St. Vincent Hospital. As you are considering residency programs, we encourage you to evaluate each program based on your individual needs, learning styles and goals. We wish you much success in your search for a residency program. Please don’t hesitate to contact us should you have further questions about our program. We look forward to hearing from you.
