Michael Chittenden 

Michael D. Chittenden, B.A., M.H.A.

President, St.Vincent Carmel Hospital 

Michael D. Chittenden is president of St.Vincent Carmel Hospital. He is responsible for operations, financial leadership and the medical and strategic direction of our 124-bed hospital. In 2009, Thomson Reuters recognized St.Vincent Carmel Hospital as a Top 100 Hospital.

Mr. Chittenden joined St.Vincent Health in 1979, and has served in several leadership positions. He led the joint venture and start-up of the Mid-America Clinical Laboratories, currently serving many hospitals in the St.Vincent Health ministry.

Mr. Chittenden was also responsible for the $32 million Carmel Hospital expansion in 2003, which included the addition of:

  • 28 hospital beds
  • A new emergency area
  • The initiation of a new obstetrical service

He also led efforts to develop a joint venture with the our medical staff to build an outpatient surgery and endoscopy center.

He has served on community boards including:

  • The Carmel Clay Chamber of Commerce
  • The Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana
  • The Hamilton County Alliance
  • Several local athletic boards

Mr. Chittenden earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington and a master’s degree in health care administration from the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Indianapolis. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
