St.Vincent StatFlight, an emergency medical helicopter service, provides high-level critical care and rapid transportation. A helicopter can be in flight within minutes of the dispatch call, 24 hours a day, every day.
StatFlight flies within a 150-mile radius of its bases. Stretching from border to border, StatFlight serves the entire state of Indiana as well as many surrounding states.
Because of the quick response times, rapid transport, and availability, thousands of lives can be saved by the utilization of air medical services. While trauma and motor vehicle crashes that require helicopter transport capture headlines, a large number of patients are moved from rural hospitals to major medical centers for high-level medical care. StatFlight transports patients between medical centers, regardless of the referring or receiving location.
Patients at the scene of a trauma are transported to the nearest appropriate Trauma Center. Patients at the scene of specific medical emergencies will be transported to the nearest appropriate hospital specializing in their condition. This may include Stroke Centers, Hand Centers or Cardiac Catheterization Labs.
About 40 percent of StatFlight transports are trauma patients, 50 percent are cardiac patients, five percent are pediatric, and the rest have various medical conditions.
Call for medical transport when medical professionals trained in critical-care medicine and critical-care equipment are needed to adequately care for the patient. Clearly, cardiac patients requiring invasive procedures will benefit from rapid transport to a tertiary care center.
Other medical patients may require invasive monitoring, thrombolytics, vasopressors, blood administration, advanced airway management, a ventilator or other critical-care procedures.
These are the guidelines from the American College of Surgeons for when to call for rapid transport:
Local law enforcement officials, fire fighters, first responders, emergency medical providers, 911 dispatchers and healthcare professionals can contact the StatFlight Emergency Communications Center to request a critical-care transport from the scene of any injury, significant cardiac or neurological emergency or between healthcare facilities.

Quality Individuals Make the Difference
StatFlight air transports are staffed by a critical care nurse and a critical care paramedic. Each professional has extensive experience in their profession prior to joining the flight team for StatFlight. During employment with StatFlight, each professional receives extensive orientation and ongoing education. StatFlight crew members complete hundreds of hours of continuing education each year to insure that a high level of patient care is provided to our customers.
Each StatFlight professional must be certified in ACLS, PALS, TNCC or ATLS, BTLS, NRP or its equivalents, CFRN and or FPC to maintain employment with StatFlight. In addition, many of the flight professionals maintain national certifications such as CEN, CCRN, and CCEMTP
The flight team is supported by emergency medical specialists who are available for patient consultations and crew direction 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
The StatFlight medical directors and their team of physicians work with the paramedics and nurses to implement patient care protocols, monitor continuous quality improvement, conduct and complete medical research, and organize emergency medical service educational events. StatFlight medical direction team is one of the most experienced in the nation.
The medical equipment and medications on board make a StatFlight aircraft a mobile emergency room equipped to handle any patient who has been critically injured or ill. Sophisticated onboard equipment allows the flight team to monitor a patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, temperature and carbon dioxide levels. The flight team uses external defibrillators, external and internal pacemakers, advanced ventilatory and airway management equipment, intra-aortic balloon pump equipment and fetal monitors when required for high risk obstetrical patients. The team also has available an extensive pharmacological capability.
StatFlight can provide educational programs which have been approved for prehospital/nursing CEUs. If you would like a program presented to your agency, contact Rick McKinstry at (317) 347-8081.
Arrangements will be made for your presentation. Below you will find a list of specific in-service topics. This is by no means an all encompassing list of educational opportunities that we can provide. We are willing and able to adjust our in-service topics to the individual needs and expectations of our audience. We have ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ENPC, PHTLS and CPR instructors, as well as "primary instructors."
We are able to supplement any AHA classes that you might be offering, as well. In special circumstances we can sponsor an ACLS, PALS or CPR course for your agency.
