Purdue University Medical Speech Language Pathology Course

Physicians from St.Vincent Seton Specialty Hospital are presenting the challenges of working with long-term critical care patients with tracheostomies and ventilators as part of a medical speech language pathology course offered by Purdue University. This is the first course of its kind at Purdue and part of the graduate training for all Purdue Speech Language Pathology (SLP) students and an in-depth introduction to upcoming internships at various hospitals in the region. Students are often hesitant about working around trachs and vents, so the presentation explains the basic diseases, physiology and medical goals associated with these patients. Three SLP students completed a 10-week full-time internship at Seton Specialty.
