Program Tracks (IM)

One Program, Many Options

As a medium-sized program we are able to tailor our residents’ education to meet their career goals. Our graduates have entered into careers in global health, primary care, multiple subspecialties, medical education, public health, hospitalist medicine, palliative medicine, and administrative medicine amongst others! Our career planning workshops and faculty mentoring program help our residents find their best fit and guide preparation though the selection of elective rotations.

The majority of our residents complete the Categorical Medicine Track which has an ideal blend of inpatient and outpatient general medicine and subspecialty rotations. Residents who desire a fellowship or are planning a career in hospital medicine typically find that this track best meets their needs and allows the most flexibility.

We do allow two residents per class to voluntarily opt into the Primary Care Track (PCT) which places a stronger emphasis on preparing residents for careers in ambulatory medicine. Please see the PCT curriculum on our curriculum page for more details. Past PCT residents have even acquired specialty training in women’s health including learning procedures like colposcopy and endometrial biopsy.

We offer a robust choice of electives including unique opportunities such as Global Health/International Medicine, Hospice/Palliative Medicine, Administrative Medicine, Medical Informatics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, Dermatology, and Research. With Program Director approval residents can create a novel elective experience or do away rotations.

For prospective residents seeking training for Clinical Base Year prior to advanced training we offer six Preliminary Medicine spots - please visit our separate Transitional/Preliminary Medicine page for additional information.
