About the Trauma Center

About the St.Vincent Trauma Center

The St.Vincent Trauma Center is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide patients with serious or life-threatening injuries the highly specialized care they need in emergency situations. When injured patients arrive at the St.Vincent Trauma Center, they receive priority access to our doctors and resources, 24/7. The surgeons and specialists at the St.Vincent Trauma Center are experts at getting patients diagnosed and treated quickly and accurately in a facility with cutting-edge technology—because in a trauma situation, every second counts.

When patients require immediate emergency care, including those with severe injuries, they can be transported via one of the four St.Vincent StatFlight helicopters to the St.Vincent Trauma Center. These helicopters provide the most rapid patient transportation available and are based in West Lafayette, North Vernon, Anderson, and Danville. St.Vincent also provides StatGround, an emergency vehicle service designed to be the fastest and most reliable ground transportation available to emergency patients in Indiana.

St.Vincent has integrated virtually every department into the trauma program. This means that the Trauma Center at St.Vincent Hospital is not limited to just emergency care, but also includes:

  • Radiology
  • Operating rooms
  • Trauma/neuro intensive care
  • Blood bank

The program included renovation of the 16-bed ICU for trauma:

  • 8-bed Neurosurgery ICU including neurotrauma
  • 8-bed Trauma/Surgical ICU
  • Additional 16 beds
  • Additional 64 slice CT scanner adjacent to ED
  • Portable CT scanner for ICU
  • Trauma registry
  • Other equipment: Level I rapid infusers, OR instruments, radiology equipment, office space

Mission and History of the Program

It is the goal of the St.Vincent Trauma Program to serve as the provider of choice of trauma services for Central Indiana and beyond. We seek to provide equivalent care to Level I facilities for the severely injured patient with identical activation response times, availability of resources, and specialists.

The program opened for trauma in November of 2010, with air medical support with StatFlight and integration of air and ground dispatch and inter-hospital transfers with OneCall. St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital and St.Vincent Health made the decision to become a Trauma Center to relieve the burden of distance for EMS and families, provide a referral option for injured patients for St.Vincent Health, St.Vincent Orthopedics, and other hospitals, and be a full-service provider.
